Little girl was abandoned by dad who said she was ‘dead’ to him – now she’s a famous actress

In 1975, a musician from The Hudson Brothers crossed paths with Goldie Hawn on a first-class flight from New York to Los Angeles. Both were at the height of their careers, and the spark was immediate. He later said the attraction was instant—he asked her to dinner that night, and the relationship took off. It was passionate from the start, the physical chemistry never faltering even when other parts of their romance grew strained.

They married in 1976 while expecting their first child, a son. His birth at Cedars-Sinai was frightening: he suffered meconium aspiration and was isolated for three days. The new parents split their time between the neonatal unit and Hawn’s bedside, fearing the worst, until their baby pulled through. Three years later they welcomed a daughter, and for a time the family of four settled into a rhythm that looked, from the outside, like a Hollywood fairy tale.

Behind the scenes, the marriage was faltering. The musician has said he wanted a traditional partnership, while Hawn’s views on commitment were looser; he recalled that she told him early on she couldn’t imagine lifelong monogamy. By 1981, he moved out, and the marriage ended.

Hawn began seeing Kurt Russell in 1983, years after their first meeting as young co-stars on The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. Their reunion on Swing Shift led to a lasting relationship and, in 1986, the birth of their son, Wyatt. Blending households brought growing pains. Hawn’s daughter later remembered the magnitude of meeting Russell’s son, Boston, and wondering what “family” would mean now that their mother was deeply in love with someone new.

As the years passed, Hawn’s older children spoke openly about feeling abandoned by their biological father after the divorce and about Russell’s steady presence. Her son has said that the man who raised him from age six shaped him into the adult he became, while her daughter has repeatedly credited Russell for showing up during hard seasons.

The musician, Bill Hudson, has pushed back on that narrative, alleging that Hawn soured the children on him and that he was pushed to the margins. The rift burst into public view on Father’s Day 2015, when Oliver Hudson posted a childhood photo with the caption “Happy abandonment day,” tagging his sister. Bill responded angrily, saying a phone call could have spared a public spectacle, and later declared that if his older children wished to cut him out, they had succeeded. Kate Hudson compounded the moment by honoring Russell as the father who was present; Bill, stung, said he wished they would stop using the Hudson name and removed their mementos from his home.

In the years since, Russell has continued to embrace grandfatherhood to Kate and Oliver’s children, while Bill’s relationship with his older kids remains fractured. For Kate and Oliver, the story they tell is one of resilience and chosen family—gratitude for the man who stepped in and became “Dad,” and a decision to build forward without reopening old wounds. For Bill, it is a tale of betrayal and distance he says he never wanted.

What endures are the complicated contours of a family shaped by fame, divorce, and new beginnings: a brief, blazing marriage; a near-tragic birth that turned miraculous; a second act with a partner who became a cornerstone; and adult children who, in public and private, decided which bonds to honor and which to release.
